Meet the maker: Ohlive

Chef Alain Indria has spent years exploring how to make delicious food with natural, plant-based ingredients. He's cooked on Belgian television and even prepared private meals for the likes of Sting and Willem Dafoe. But the idea for Ohlive came much closer to home, while making sandwiches for his three children. Alain loved the flavour of extra virgin olive oil, but also the pleasure of spreading butter on good bread. Why couldn't he bring the two together?

The result is Ohlive, a smooth, spreadable olive-oil butter, handmade in small batches in Antwerp, Belgium. Alain uses Spanish Picual extra virgin olive oil, chosen for its distinctive flavour, and keeps the recipes entirely plant-based, without milk or preservatives. All the pleasure of a buttery spread, with the character of a good olive oil.

Ohlive has caught the attention of some of Europe's finest chefs, including Gilles Goujon of three-Michelin-starred L'Auberge du Vieux Puits, who serves Ohlive at the table. It's also used by Maarten Bouckaert of two-Michelin-starred Restaurant Castor, while acclaimed Belgian chef Wout Bru was one of the first to discover its potential.
