Description

The Microplane Bowl Grater turns apples, carrots, cabbage and hard cheese into generous shreds, straight into your bowl. Its extra-coarse blade is ideal for crisp coleslaw, golden hash browns and courgette fritters. There is no board covered in stray pieces, and less to gather up afterwards.

Set it across any round bowl up to 16cm wide, or rest it inside at an angle. The rounded, non-slip handles hold it steady while you grate. Its photo-etched stainless-steel blade cuts cleanly rather than ripping the food, helping release its natural aroma and flavour.

  • Extra-coarse blade creates generous, even shreds
  • Fits round bowls up to 16cm wide
  • Two non-slip handles provide a steady grip
  • Ultra-sharp stainless-steel blade made in USA
  • Dishwasher-safe and simple to rinse clean

Try it for cauliflower rice, grated potato for rösti, or a quick salad of apple, carrot and cabbage. The petrol-green handles also make it easy to spot in a crowded utensil drawer.

Meet the maker: Microplane

The Microplane blade has become a favourite with chefs because it does not crush citrus peel or drag at a piece of Parmesan. Its tiny, razor-sharp edges cut cleanly, creating fine, fluffy shavings that fall straight into your bowl.

The story began with a woodworking tool. In 1994, a Canadian baker was making an orange cake and struggling with her grater. She borrowed a Microplane rasp from her husband’s workshop. The zest fell from it “like snowflakes”. A kitchen essential had been discovered in an unexpected place.

Microplane is part of Grace Manufacturing, a family-founded company based in Russellville, Arkansas. Microplane was the first manufacturer to use photo-etching technology for grater blades. The blades are made in the USA, drawing on more than 50 years of experience in photochemical manufacturing and precision metalwork.

By the late 1990s, Microplane graters were being used by Julia Child and Martha Stewart. Today, the employee-owned company makes more than 400 products across its kitchen, woodworking and personal-care ranges, with distribution around the world.
