Description

DeOrtegas Picual Extra Virgin Organic Olive Oil comes from one family in Yecla, Murcia. Marcelo and Rafaela Ortega have grown olives organically for more than 30 years, and they look after every step themselves, from the trees to the bottle. The olives are picked early and cold-pressed, which is why the oil smells like fresh tomato leaves and freshly cut grass before it's even hit the plate. There's a peppery bite at the back of the throat too. That's a good sign, it means the oil is fresh and full of polyphenols.

  • 100% Picual olives, picked early
  • Cold-pressed by mechanical means only
  • Grown and milled on one estate
  • Gold medals from Italy, Japan, Israel
  • Low acidity: just 0.1% oleic acid

Pour it over grilled vegetables while they're still warm, or finish a bowl of fish stew with a slow glug right before it hits the table. It also stands up well to strong flavours, think seared steak or a sharp tomato salad, without getting lost. A little goes a long way, so the 500ml bottle should keep you going for a while — though in our kitchen, it rarely lasts as long as planned.
