Description

Majani Chocolate Specialties Selection brings together three signature Italian chocolates in a gift box. There’s Scorza, with its thin, irregular curls and crisp, crumbly texture; four-layer FIAT Cremino, made with hazelnuts and almonds; and Tortellino, a chocolate shell with a soft cream centre, shaped after Bologna’s famous filled pasta. It’s a lovely way to explore contrasting chocolate textures, or share a few specialties after dinner.

  • Gift box with Scorza, FIAT Cremino and Tortellino chocolates
  • Classic FIAT Cremino contains 43% Italian hazelnuts and almonds
  • Bean-to-bar chocolate made entirely in Italy

There are some good stories behind these shapes, too. Created in 1832, Scorza is described by Majani as Italy’s first solid chocolate; its bark-like form comes from rolling a thin layer of chocolate onto itself. FIAT Cremino was created for the launch of Fiat’s Tipo 4 car in 1911, with four layers to match the model’s name. Serve a selection with coffee, or tuck the box into an Italian-food hamper.

Meet the maker: Majani

In 1911, Fiat wanted a chocolate to give customers buying its new Tipo 4 luxury car. Bologna’s Majani created Cremino Fiat, with four alternating layers of hazelnut and almond cream to echo the car’s name. More than a century later, Majani says the recipe remains unchanged.

The chocolate maker’s story began in 1796, in a small “Laboratorio di Cose Dolci” – “Laboratory of Sweet Things” – near Bologna’s Piazza Maggiore. Chocolate was generally something you drank, but in 1832 Majani created Scorza, which it describes as Italy’s first solid chocolate. Its name means “bark”: thin chocolate rolled onto itself gave it a wrinkled, irregular appearance resembling oak bark. The original name, design and graphics have all survived.

Nine generations of the same family have run Majani, and its historic shop remains on Via de’ Carbonesi, where the family once lived, made chocolate and sold it under one roof. Production now takes place in Crespellano, outside Bologna, with every stage handled in-house, starting from raw cocoa beans.
