Meet the maker: Leone

Leone's story began in 1857, when Luigi Leone started making little sugar pastilles in his family's tavern in Piedmont, northern Italy. Flavoured with mint, cinnamon and cloves, they were originally offered to guests after their meals. Word spread, and before long Luigi had a thriving sweet-making business in Turin, with fans including the Italian royal family.

More than 160 years later, Leone is still making its famous pastel-coloured pastilles, along with chocolates, jellies and other Italian sweets. Many come in gorgeous little illustrated tins that look as though they've stepped straight out of an old-fashioned Italian sweet shop. Even the pastilles themselves carry the tiny Leone 'L', a detail that's been part of the sweets since 1900. A gorgeous piece of Italian confectionery history.
