Johan Bülow was on a mission to make the world fall in love with liquorice. In 2007, he opened a tiny shop on the Danish island of Bornholm, making fresh liquorice right there in the shop. The smell drifted down the street, and within two hours he'd sold everything.

Johan began experimenting with chocolate-covered liquorice, a combination that initially raised eyebrows in Denmark. But it turned out to be a brilliant idea. Today, Lakrids by Bülow makes everything from intensely salty liquorice to little balls wrapped in chocolate and dusted with cocoa or fruit powders. Even people who think they don't like liquorice often change their minds.
