Use the katazome stoneware teacup set to serve a relaxing cup of Japanese green tea to guests after a Japanese dinner party.

‘Katazome’ is the name of a traditional Japanese fabric-dyeing technique. It was used to create the intricate patterns on kimonos. A waxy paste is pushed through an expertly carved stencil onto the fabric. When the coloured dye is applied, the paste resists or repels the dye, leaving the design to show through. The floral patterns on these stoneware teacups are typical of the traditional katazome designs.

This ‘bowl’ style of teacup is just as popular in Japan as the taller, cylindrical style that we’ve become more familiar with. It’s mostly a matter of preference – we like using this style for lighter, more fragrant teas, as the wide bowl allows you to really experience the aromas. Try a tranquil cup of jasmine tea, or this subtly sweet and floral sakura sencha green tea with cherry blossom.

Please note that each piece is individually made, hence minor variations in colour, pattern and texture may occur from that shown in the photo.
