Glutinous Rice

Glutinous rice is known for its sticky texture, and is commonly known as sticky rice, sweet rice, waxy rice and gao nep and is widely used in Chinese and South East Asian cuisine.

What is glutinous rice?

Don’t be misled by the name: glutinous rice does not contain gluten! The name refers to the rice’s gluey consistency which easily binds it into rice balls and cakes.

In fact, this short-grained Asian rice, along with its glamorous cousins: glutinous rice flour and black glutinous rice are the perfect choice for anyone following a gluten-free diet.

Use glutinous rice to make Japanese mochi, Chinese zongzi (sticky rice dumplings) or classic Thai mango and coconut dessert, khao niew mamuang.
