Skeppshult Cast Iron Wafer Iron, 15cm

Description

With the Skeppshult cast iron wafer iron, you can make beautifully thin wafers to top ice cream or desserts. Or why not eat as they are as a sweet and crispy treat with a cup of coffee or tea. Handmade in Sweden, the wafer iron has a 5mm thick base and sturdy steel handles. Cast iron heats up slowly, and will maintain its heat for a long time, with the thick base helping it to heat evenly so you will get consistent results with your wafers every time. The iron is engraved with a decorative design that will leave beautiful swirling patterns, traditional for the Swedish wafers.

Heat the wafer iron on a medium heat on your hob, grease the iron with butter or oil and add about 1 tbsp of your batter and close the lid firmly to ensure a nice and thin wafer. Flip the pan halfway through cooking so your wafers are cooked evenly throughout. You want them golden brown. Traditionally these are rolled when they come off the iron, you can use a wooden chopstick or similar to roll around. We recommend using a tea towel when rolling to avoid burning your fingers.  You can also shape them into a bowl by draping them over the back of a small bowl of muffin pan just as you take them off the iron. Or just leave them flat as they are. Serve the wafers with ice cream, as a crispy side to cream desserts or have it on its own with your afternoon cup of coffee or tea.

Measuring 15cm in diameter, the wafer iron can be used on all cooktops, including induction, but we don’t recommend using the booster setting. The iron is seasoned with rapeseed oil to create a natural non-stick surface. This means that your cooked wafers will release easily and slide right on to your plate. Plus, clean-up is quick and easy!

Swedish company Skeppshult (pronounced ‘hep-salt’) has been making cast iron products by hand since 1906. The process starts with raw iron, which is heated to a searing 1,500°C in a furnace. Then the molten metal is cast into special moulds made from sand, which can withstand the extreme temperatures.

Sand moulds can only be used once, and therefore each product is unique – no two items are the same. Each sand mould is recycled and used for another product. Skeppshult seasons its cast iron with rapeseed oil (also called canola oil) from Österlen to protect it from damage. This also gives the cast iron its natural non-stick properties.

Skeppshult’s cast iron is an environmentally friendly alternative to plastic-coated aluminium pans.

Skeppshult pans are all carefully oiled and seasoned by hand before they leave the factory. You may notice some oil marks around the base of the handle, as a result of this. Any small markings will lift off easily by re-oiling the pan and allowing it to dry.
