The sardines are then canned with olive oil, salt, cloves and chilli. The result is sardines with a gentle heat. Serve the sardines on buttered bread for a simple starter, or enjoy with olives as part of an antipasti spread.
Nuri is one of the oldest – and most iconic – brands of Portuguese tinned fish. The name Nuri comes from the Arabic word for ‘my light’, and this is what a customer exclaimed when they first saw the shiny sardines in the tin. The artisanal production process is steeped in tradition, with 37 steps required to produce a single Nuri tin.
