What is molasses?

Molasses is a thick, dark syrup that is made by boiling down the juice of sugar cane and sugar beets. It is sometimes called black treacle or just treacle. Molasses has been used as a sweetener and flavouring agent for centuries. Molasses is typically known for its use in baking, cooking, and brewing beer.

Types of molasses

There are two different types of molasses: light and dark. Light molasses is lighter in colour, milder in flavour, and less viscous than dark molasses. Dark molasses are a by-product of the process of refining white sugar from cane juice or beet juice.

Pomegranate molasses is a type of sweet-sour molasses frequently used in Middle Eastern. It is made from boiled-down pomegranate juice as opposed to pure cane sugar

What can you cook with molasses?

If you're not a fan of molasses, try adding it to your brownies. It will give them a rich, deep flavour with a little sweetness on the side.
Molasses is also great in hot cocoa or as an addition to homemade gingerbread cookies for the holidays!
