Description

Wakame is a type of edible seaweed. It has a mild, umami-rich flavour. You will find it in many Japanese recipes, from miso soup to seaweed salads. 

Wakame is dried to preserve its flavour and nutritional benefits. Soak it in cold water for 10 minutes or hot water for three minutes. It will soften and increase in volume, ready to be added to soups and stews.

Rich in vitamins and antioxidants, wakame is a healthy addition to your pantry. You can add it to stir fries, grain bowls and Asian salads. In Japan, it’s used as a garnish for ramen and steamed rice.

Try this recipe for cucumber and wakame salad. It has a tangy Japanese dressing made with soy sauce, mirin and rice vinegar. Serve it as a side dish for tonkatsu or chicken teriyaki.
