Chawanmushi is a classic Japanese dish and the name means ‘steamed in a tea bowl’. These charming lidded bowls are the traditional way to serve this dish. It is a savoury egg custard that is typically topped with shiitake mushrooms, boiled shrimp and lily root.

Serve chawanmushi as a starter or bring out with the main meal as a side dish. The chawanmushi bowls are also perfect for serving miso soup or individual salads.

Shio is the Japanese word for ‘salt’ and this chawanmushi bowl has a black and white counterpart called kosho, or ‘pepper’. Mix and match these stylish bowls with the crockery in our Tatsumaki and Yukishino ranges.

Please note that each piece is individually made, hence minor variations in colour and texture may occur from that shown in the photo.
