Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada had just sailed from Japan, carrying ideas from Japanese, Chinese, Korean and English traditions with them. They called it an East\/West exchange. Soon, artists travelled from across the world to train at St Ives, among them Michael Cardew, Norah Braden, Katharine Pleydell-Bouverie, and William \"Bill\" Marshall.
