Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada had just sailed from Japan, carrying ideas from Japanese, Chinese, Korean and English traditions with them. They called it an East\/West exchange. They sourced clay from nearby: earthenware from St Erth, stoneware from Dorset, ball clay from Devon. They burned bracken to make wood-ash glazes. \n\n\u003cp\u003eBy the late 1930s, Bernard's son David joined the business and in 1946 the first Standard Ware catalogue appeared. It soon became an iconic collection pottery.
