Get a Brooklyn Brew Shop cider making kit and keep yourself well stocked with refreshing homemade cider.
The reusable kit includes:
- 1 Gallon (approx. 4 litres) fermentation jug
- Racking cane
- Tubing clamp
- Screw cap stopper
- Hard cider yeast (3 packets)
- Sanitizer (3 packets)
To make the cider you will also need: a funnel, apple juice or apple cider, some honey, and something to bottle the cider in. You can reuse swing-top bottles from lemonade, or even empty jam jars!
You can use either apple juice or apple cider - both will produce an alcoholic cider, but with slightly different tastes. Make sure it is pasteurized (or even better, UV pasteurized) and preservative free. Avoid cider/juice that has potassium sorbate or sodium benzoate in it. Your local farmer’s market or natural grocer are great sources. If using cider, let it warm to room temperature before you start making your hard cider. If you are juicing your own apples, or using a cider that is entirely unpasteurized, bring your cider to a boil and then let cool to room temperature before fermenting.
The Brooklyn Brew Shop was founded in 2009 with the aim of showing New Yorkers that home brewing can be both simple and fun. Erica Shea and Stephen Valand developed easy-to-use kits that are designed specifically for stove-top brewing. So not only is making your own beer and cider easier than ever, but you can even do it if you’re strapped for space! The Brooklyn Brew Shop was an instant hit, with their mixes for classic pale ales and Belgium style beers, as well as seasonal offerings and partnerships with famous breweries.
After bottling, recommended carbonating period is two weeks. Makes cider at approximately 7% ABV
