Chia seeds are mottle-grey in colour and have a distinctive crunchy texture. Chia seeds are rich in omega-3 fatty acids which is even reflected in their etymology - "chia" is derived from the Nahuatl word chian, meaning 'oily'. Native to central, southern Mexico and Guatemala, chia was an important crop in the Aztec empire.
Add chia seeds to smoothies and breakfast cereals or sprinkle over home-made bread and muffins.
