A handmade bamboo matcha whisk adds elegance and authenticity to Japanese tea ceremonies. This exquisite whisk is handmade in Japan – in a family workshop that has been crafting traditional matcha tea whisks for 16 generations.

The black bamboo is grown in Japan, and dried for at least 2 years. This slow drying process makes the bamboo very strong and long lasting. Each prong is expertly cut with a knife, before being woven with string to open them out. The fine prongs create a smooth, frothy cup of matcha every time.

For the perfect cup of usucha – or ‘thin’ matcha tea – measure 1 flat teaspoon of matcha powder into a matcha tea bowl. If you have high accuracy scales, measure 1.5g. Add 2 tablespoons of cold water and gently whisk into a paste using circular motions. Then add 75ml water at 70°C, and whisk until frothy using a back-and-forth, ‘M/W’ shaped motion. Try not to scrape the bottom of the bowl at this stage, or you may damage the prongs.

With use, the twisted centre of the whisk will begin to unfurl – this is known as ‘blooming’, and is to be expected.

After each use, fill a small clean bowl with warm water. Whisk the matcha whisk in this until all the matcha is gone from the prongs. Stand, prongs down, to air dry. Store in a cool, dry place.
