Description
This packet contains ten sheets of pre-cooked tofu, ready to be stuffed and turned into the famous vegetarian-friendly, inari sushi. The strips of bean curd are dressed in soy sauce and mirin, giving them a slightly sweet, delicate flavour before they are deep-fried.
Inari sushi, or inarizushi, is a popular offering at Shinto shrines dedicated to the god Inari. Inari is the god of fertility, rice, tea and sake. This style of sushi goes right back to the Edo period (1603-1868), so is also known as edomae inari age or edomae ifuri dentou no aji - these roughly translate as "Edo-period fried inari" and "the taste of traditional Edo-period".
To make your own inari sushi, simply rinse the pockets and stuff with cooked sushi rice and your choice of fillings. Popular fillings include sesame seeds, ginkgo nuts, slivers of carrots and burdock roots.
