Agnoni balsamic borettane onions in olive are the pickled onions you’ve so far only dreamed of! Serve the sweet onions with a sharp cheddar and fresh crusty bread, for an Italian twist on a ploughman’s lunch.

Borettane onions are a variety of Italian pearl onion. They’re easily identified by their flattened shape. These borettane onions are grown on the Agnoni family farm and harvested by hand. The mild onions are gently cooked in balsamic vinegar, making them even sweeter. They’re then preserved in oil so they don’t become too acidic.

The balsamic borettane onions have a toothsome crunch and sweet acidity. Add whole onions to a roasting pan with potatoes, tomatoes and fennel for a caramelised accompaniment to grilled meats.

Agnoni began with husband & wife Neno and Nena Agnoni in the 1960s. They bought a farm just outside of their home town of Cori, in the Lazio region of western Italy. After the second world war, they had a desire to create something with their own hands that would last for future generations. On the Agnoni farm they still do things by hand wherever possible. That includes harvesting, preparing vegetables for preservation, and making some of the preserves themselves. Today, Nena Agnoni still oversees her children and grandchildren, as they run the family farm and make traditional Italian preserves for the world to enjoy.

Ingredients: borettane onions (60%), sunflower seed oil (29%), extra virgin olive oil (10%), balsamic vinegar (wine vinegar, concentrated wine must, colour [E150d]), sugar, salt, acidity regulator (citric acid). Contains sulphites.
