Whole star anise or 'star aniseed' adds the warm notes of anise to Indian curries and Chinese red-braised dishes.

Star anise is rich in a natural oil which can solidify when exposed to low temperatures. The crystallised oil may look like small glittery particles among the star anise. However, once the star anise is warmer the particles will disappear.
