Spigarello leaf broccoli seeds grow into one of the most sought after, iconic and renowned vegetables in Italy. Spigariello broccoli, as it is otherwise known, is a wavy, edible green not dissimilar in appearance to kale. It has a tender, succulent texture with crunchy stems. It has none of the bitterness of kale, and brings a slightly sweet, mild grassy flavour to dishes.

Spigarello leaf broccoli seeds are suitable for growing in both raised beds and containers. Sow the spigarello broccoli seeds in a seed tray between May and July and harvest them between October and December.

Try blending raw spigarello broccoli leaves into a smoothie. Or for a simple side dish blanch the spigarello in salted water and sauté it in olive oil with some cooked onion. It’s traditionally used to top pizza in Naples but also works wonderfully in pasta dishes with olives and a touch of chilli. Spigarello broccoli can even be used as a substitute for spinach in eggs Florentine.
